Jake and Mike's Picks of the Week- 3/2/16

Jake's Picks:

Swamp Thing #3 An old friend appears in the swamp with an unbelievable proposition for Swamp Thing: using a dark spell, it might be possible for the Avatar of the Green to return to his human form as Alec Holland and regain his old life. But all magic has a cost—will Swamp Thing get everything he has ever wanted, or discover the consequences of leaping before you look? Featuring a guest appearance by Zatanna, who is definitely an under-used character.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #1 After the mega popular #0 issues came out, we finally have the start of the new Power Rangers series!  When Rita Repulsa creates an evil Green Power Ranger by brainwashing recent transfer student Tommy, the team is able to free him from her grasp and get him on their side. But with remnants of Repulsa’s control still stirring in the back of Tommy’s mind, he must confront the fact he may be more of a danger to his new team than a help. This is “Green Ranger: Year One.”

Guardians of Infinity #4 This is the dawning of the age of Hermetikus! He’s the Lord of the Newcomers and seems to have access to all of space and time! And he also seems to have complicated history with Stella Nega, leader of the Guardians 1000! With Dan Abnett on this title, this is the only Guardians book for me, this is what Guardians should be.

Mike's Picks:

Black Widow #1 This book is just jaw-dropping.  Mark Waid used so little words, but found a way to keep this story so interesting and exciting.  And Samnee kept it explosive from page to page (Not in the Michael Bay kind of way)!  His art really did most of the talking, and I just soaked it all in!  I encourage everyone to pick this book up, I have no doubt it'll be a beloved classic one day.

I'm happy with the similarities with this book and classic pre-college Spider-Man stories.  The real struggle of keeping your grades up and pleasing your parents to keep them unknowing of your alternate superhero life.  I think Bendis does best writing stories about teens rather than adults, and I think this story shows is a great example of that.  This book has been really exciting to me, and I'm more than pleased with seeing Miles shine in the current Marvel Universe.

Invincible Iron Man #7 I kind of enjoy seeing Tony no longer in a position of great wealth and prosperity, but struggling to keep his company afloat.  And it makes it even interesting that he has to stand in the shadow of Parker Industries which just came out of left field.  It's a neat change as well to see characters move from book to book, with Mary Jane in a supporting role, let's just hope Bendis doesn't turn her into Peeper Pots.
