Jake and Mike's Picks of the Week-1/6/15

Jake's Picks:

Swamp Thing #1 Swamp Thing is back!  And what better creative team to do so than Len Wein and Kelley Jones?  As if Jones' art wasn't enough to interest you, Wein crafts a really fun and well articulated story.  This issue has a very House of Mystery feel; I always thought those old House of Mystery comics from the 70's were a lot of fun.  We get to see the internal turmoil that Swamp Thing constantly goes through, as well as appearances from several other cool characters.  I highly suggest this book.

Uncanny X-Men #1 Cullen Bunn brings us another X-Men book this week with the start of Uncanny X-Men.  Bunn on writing details and the line-up of characters definitely had me interested.  The team consists of Magneto, Sabretooth, Monet, Archangel, and Psylocke.  It's not a team I was expecting but one that has me very interested in how they'll work together.  It reminds be a bit of X-Force, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't seem like they're working off the grid, I'm curious if that will have backlashes.

Spider-Man/Deadpool #1 This book is as silly as you'd expect.  Only Deadpool's quips could make even Spider-Man lose his cool, and there is plenty of that in this book.  While I'm not the biggest Deadpool fan in the world, I thought I'd check this out and I'm glad I did.  It is a very funny first issue and the last page left a cliffhanger that will bring me back for more.

Mike's Picks:

Spider-Gwen #4 One thing i love about this book is that there is a lot of emotion involved. It really reminds of classic Spider-man stories but replacing Peter for Gwen, and bringing it up to modern times. Its also interesting to read how a female would have reacted in comparison to Peter did with his responsibility. And the way the introduce the old Marvel characters we love and place them in different roles is just refreshing!

Paper Girls #4 This book has done a really great job of spreading the story out without getting boring or tiresome. The story just reminds me of my favorite movies from the 80's and the art is really great! Each book is very leading into the next with a great amount of surprises at the end of each story!

Batman Beyond #8 We are finally done with first Arc with Drake as the new Batman Beyond. It was one thing with Terry already being from the future knowing how to use everything but Tim has no clue how most future technologies work. He's still in the process of learning how the suit works. It just makes for a new and interesting take on an old favorite!
