Here are the picks of the week, which comics did you like?
The Shadow #1
The Shadow is back in a brand new series written by Cullen Bunn with art by Giovanni Timpano. I love pulp comics like this and Bunn doesn't disappoint here. The Shadow is out to stop an organization of evil magicians who are trying to uncover a secret that only the Shadow and Harry Houdini's ghost know. Do I have you interested yet? This is shaping up to be a great series.
Will Eisner's The Spirit #2
It's the perfect week for pulp crime comics. Matt Wagner and Dan Schkade give us a different look at Denny Colt's world; the Spirit has gone missing and it's up to Ebony and Sammy to become ace detectives and find out what happened to him.
Airboy is one of the most unique series in comics. James Robinson gives us a different take on an autobiography that will have you begging for more. Though only a mini-series, this is already becoming one of my favorite series of the year. Greg Hinkle's art is some of the most outstanding and interesting in the medium. This is a series that I can't recommend enough, but this one is definitely not for kids.
Civil War #2
I was a big fan of the first Civil War arc when it came out. Things got real in the Marvel Universe; for me, that was the first time politics in the book felt like real issues in our government. Plus, they put such a great writer (Charles Soule) with it. This arc is just a continuation of what could have happened if the war hadn't ended and it starts right off the bat with a new struggle.
Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #3
I really enjoyed Spider-Man: Reign; a world where heroes are outlawed and the villains are the law and Peter Parker can't hide being Spider-Man any longer. This story is very similar, but it puts Peter in the role of a father and husband. Being Spider-Man will help people, but put his family at risk.
The Wicked + the Divine #13
I love a story that takes a young person and thrusts them into adulthood when they're not prepared for it. Laura is a 17-year old girl whose life has mingled with the lives of twelve people who are gods reincarnated as rock stars. She befriends Lucifer who has been convicted of murder and Laura takes the responsibility to prove her innocence. Laura has loved these people and wants to be a part of them so much, now Laura's wish has come true.
